Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) again experienced an uptick in enrollment for its fall 2023 semester. Achieving its highest enrollment in nine years, the University finalized its student count with 2,166 students.

ECSU is steadily attracting top-notch, traditional, and non-traditional students. According to university leadership, strategic recruitment of adult learners and graduate students was key to ECSU’s continued growth. Of particular significance is the 45% increase in the number of students pursuing credit-bearing professional development in Education. This is a testament to the university’s commitment to supporting the development of quality teachers in the state. ECSU is dedicated to helping the state of North Carolina achieve the goals outlined by myFutureNC as evidenced by its 4.3% increase in the adult learner population from the prior year.

“I am thrilled to announce that ECSU has experienced six consecutive years of enrollment growth. Our welcoming campus environment, faculty distinction, and innovative programs continue to attract a wide range of talented students,” says Dr. Karrie G. Dixon, ECSU Chancellor.  “With our focus on academic excellence, we are welcoming highly gifted students who possess strong credentials and are focused on success in and out of the classroom.  We are also attracting students who want to continue and complete their education, which leads to economic mobility for our graduates. I am proud that ECSU faculty and staff are committed to preparing our students to become leaders and innovators in their chosen fields within our communities, our state, and the nation.”

Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Farrah J. Ward, said the University’s continued enrollment growth is the result of its holistic and integrated approach to recruitment and retention.

“ECSU's enrollment growth is a true testament to the dedication of our faculty, staff, and administrators,” she said. “It is only because of the collaborative efforts of the campus community that we have seen growth in enrollment for the sixth year straight.”
